Abi Ola - I use patterns to relax and focus my attention to one thing. Due to being on the autistic spectrum, I am monotropic, and tend to focus my attention to one particular thing at a time, and neglect other less significant things. This is seen through my repetitive patterns. My artworks make the audience notice the miniscule details that one may overlook, in everyday life. It also can be seen as a Rorschach test, and be therapeutic for the viewer. Ultimately, by creating a calming effect, the work brings to light invisible disabilities, and mental health. In addition to this, I take inspiration from African and British textiles, and my imagination. Often, the faces are without detail to force the viewer to focus mostly on the patterns and shapes. The motifs are a way to distract the audience from the subject. The characters are always submerged and camouflaged within a patterned environment, so that they are hidden in plain sight.
